Are the Tories split?

On Wednesday evening it was the first full Council meeting since the elections. Lots of exciting things happened it seems but we're still trying to piece together the full details. One thing we noticed was a motion to re-name Riverside House in Woolwich to Dorothy Mepsted House in honour of the former Tory councillor for New Eltham and Coldharbour, who stepped down at the elections.

The motion in itself isn't particularly interesting, however the fact it wasn't backed by the entire Tory Group is. You'd think that a motion to re-name a building in honour of one of your former councillors would gain the full support of your party, but for some unknown reason it didn't.

The only obvious conclusion we can draw is that the Tories are split down the middle. Presumably someone mentioned Europe!

That's just not true I'm afraid. A motion to Council has to be signed by at least two Members. (I'd post the link to the constitution but, yet again, the Council website is down)

Five of us were around to sign this motion when it was submitted and it is mischievious to suggest that the rest of the Conservative Group didn't support it. The motion, amended to include the suitable honouring of other former councillors, was carried unanimously.

We think the Councillor doth protest too much!.... Anyway, you've read this site Cllr, you must have realised that it is - in it's nature - mischievious! Of course, the beauty of splits is that no one ever admits they exist. It's just left to people like us to speculate instead.

Why would anybody want a grim tower block in Woolwich named after them?

Nobody remembers who Peggy Middleton was, but I bet her family's a bit pissed off her name's on the front of one of London's crappest buildings.
