Fear our Name!

The one thing that stood out for us at last nights Full Council was when a question was asked about the failure to attend a meeting of the London City Airport Consultative Committee for four years.

In his response, Peter "what do I do for my money?" Brooks referred to this website as the source of such accusations but didn't dare speak our name. He didn't deny that no one had attended the committee but, and our shorthand is not the best, we're sure he claimed that he did send apologies and the minutes showed these. These must be "special Peter Brooks only minutes" rather than the ones they publish then? The justification for not attending was that he always reads the agendas and if there is nothing of impact on Greenwich he does not attend.

That's right, according to the official line from the Council, the expansion of flights taking off and landing by a 40,000 a year over West Thamesmead (which sits less than a mile from the end of the runway) has no impact on the borough. Peter Brooks is the councillor that represents.... yep.... Thamesmead Moorings - although we wonder if he knows how to get there outside of an election period.

As there is concrete proof of his lie, is there any action that can be taken against a councillor for misleading the public in such a blatant manner?

As we said, we're relying on our shorthand, so unless someone produces a transcript we cannot be sure that a lie occurred. However, even if it did the way to deal with it would be threw the ballot box or the press. Or perhaps they might alter their minutes to include his apologies? Who knows!

How disgusting! He is very aware of the noise of the jets over West Thamesmead. I think what he really meant was that he will only raise issues if they fly over his home in North Thamesmead!

There are ways to deal with issues such as these.

thanks for making the effort to go along, i wish i'd been there.
How about putting a donate button on the site so we can chip in to buy GW a dictaphone?
Or put a request on for one on freecycle?
Keep it up (sorry indigo, i meant the good work not.......)

Indeed there was due to the John Roan School protest. There will be more details to follow. We're busy people.

Re: LCACC minutes not showing Peter Brooks apologies.

I do hope that LCACC are not tempted at any request they may receive to make any additions to the minutes as I have every set printed off.

Note that the London Development Agency has said the go-ahead of Crossrail raises doubts as to the long-term viability of London City. The airport needs LDA land to expand. LDA chief Manny Lewis is reported to be working on plans to build a community in case the airport does end up closing.

So anyone opposed to the airport expanding, you should be backing this argument with your London Assembly members as well as councillors and MPs (leave no stone unturned is my advice).

I'm sure that our dogged local newspapers and determined opposition party councillors are hot on the trail of this story.

Aren't they?

Oh, right then.

Nigel Fletcher (http://nigelfletcher.blogspot.com/) , for example, uses most of his blog posts to take shots at central Government.

I think his last post about Greenwich Council was back in June. That was when he got caught with his fingers in the pork barrel and a ticket for the Council's O2 box in his pocket and he was desperately trying to explain why he wasn't on the gravy train.

The Council are only able to get away with what they do because most people don't know about them.

If Councillors like Nigel spent a bit more time thinking local rather than trying to play with the big boys at Westminster I think we'd all be a bit better off.

Grumble.

Councillor Brooks is on thin ice with regards to his claims that he checks the agendas for items that affect Greenwich. Clearly that is not the case.

My neighbour has alerted me to something they call sound contours which are in the 'airport master plan'. The sound contours are already supposed to be at 60-63db minimum over West Thamesmead and the contour and db's are predicted to spread and grow until 2020. Hmmm but Cllr Brooks thought that this didn't affect his West Thamesmead residents clearly.

Tilfen Land are going to find Tamesis Point - their future 2000 home development at Tripcock Point very hard to sell once this community mobilises itself into a full blown campaign against the Councils handling of this and also in objection to any expansion in flights from City Airport.

Will all the councillors from all the parties, Tilfen, Gallions, Greenwich Council and the MP please stand up?

As for Nigel (another what do I do for my money) Fletcher - no mention of this on his blog at all. How unsurprising.

To be fair to Nigel, a lot of his ward stuff is dealt with at http://elthamnorth.elthamconservatives.com/index.php

I was more than happy to be surprised about Nigel and was hoping to find lots of local Greenwich based news and postings on that web site.

However in October they managed to post a glorious 4 items of news. Not a word about the huge gap between full Council meetings or the non attendance of the airport meetings.

Not impressed and unfortunately not surprised.
